DIGITAL MEDIA, THE MOTHER OF JOURNALISM

Digital media has taken over and modified the act of journalism. Unlike the conventional media, the internet has been able to combine print with broadcast which is it's major selling point. So subscribing online would get you double action of both broadcast and print.

Online journalism is a course taught by Dr Tunde Akanni at the the Lagos state university,school of communication.The course brought to students the new way of journalism, it explained critically how journalism is been done online and how the internet can be used as a tool for disseminating information. Infact, the course put us through some social media that has threatened the existence of the traditional media and even taught how the traditional media are trying to adapt to the change and also going digital. Information dissemination has been so radicalized to the extent that news organizations that operate solely online today now compete favorably with the their preexisting traditional counterparts.

Various people has helped in modifying the internet and getting us what we have now, we talked about Tim Berners-Lee, Mark Zuckerberg, the Yahoo guys etc. We talked about ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigning Names and Numbers) and how Silicon Valley re-engineered journalism with the advent of the internet and how it used algorithms. 

The course also talked about the temptation of online news managers which are plagiarism, counter "news platform", never ending deadlines, language use and so on.
Dr. Tunde Akanni is actually quickwitted and knowledgeable man. Its surprising however interesting how he dictates lengthy notes off hand although the students were not really serious with the course, but we still love his teaching style.

Finally, the concept of online journalism should be introduced to all mass communication courses as the matter of fact made compulsory for the internet doesn't look like its slowing down in taking over the duties and responsibilities of the traditional media. Digital media seem to have pave and still paving a new way for the dissemination of news and information and in a mean time traditional media will go into extinction.

A CLASS OF MIXED FEELINGS AND EMOTIONS

By Jubril Zainab  I had no intention of taking the course MAC 317- Online Journalism because it is an elective course,  but the other alternative course I had was a "no go area" for me, so I had no choice than to settle for online journalism. My encounter in the class of MAC 317 has been filled with a lot of mixed feelings and emotions, because sometimes, I felt like I fully understood what is being taught in the course and at other times I felt like I have no idea of what is going on.    The First Class for MAC 317 took place at the old sociology class with less than fifty students in attendance.
