DIGITAL MEDIA, THE MOTHER OF JOURNALISM

By Jones Olayinka Digital media has taken over and modified the act of journalism. Unlike the conventional media, the internet has been able to combine print with broadcast which is it's major selling point. So subscribing online would get you double action of both broadcast and print. Online journalism is a course taught by Dr Tunde Akanni at the the Lagos state university, school of communication. The course brought to students the new way of journalism, it explained critically how journalism is been done online and how the internet can be used as a tool for disseminating information. Infact, the course put us through some social media that has threatened the existence of the traditional media and even taught how the traditional media are trying to adapt to the change and also going digital. Information dissemination has been so radicalized to the extent that news organizations that operate solely online today now compete favorably with the their preexisting traditional co...

A CLASS OF MIXED FEELINGS AND EMOTIONS

Image
By Jubril Zainab  I had no intention of taking the course MAC 317- Online Journalism because it is an elective course,  but the other alternative course I had was a "no go area" for me, so I had no choice than to settle for online journalism. My encounter in the class of MAC 317 has been filled with a lot of mixed feelings and emotions, because sometimes, I felt like I fully understood what is being taught in the course and at other times I felt like I have no idea of what is going on.    The First Class for MAC 317 took place at the old sociology class with less than fifty students in attendance. The course was taken by Dr Akintunde Akanni (a lecturer from the department of journalism). The dynamics of the internet was treated as the first topic,  this topic enlighten the students on understanding the dynamics of the internet. Other topics that were treated in the course of study are News production in the age of internet,  From basic internet to ...

MY THOUGHTS ON DR. AKANNI'S CLASS- ONLINE JOURNALISM

By Isiaka Ayobami During my attendance in the online journalism class,  i got to fully understand what online journalism means. Online journalism can be also called "digital journlaism". Online Journalism is simply publishing stories online using the internet. There is more to that and it takes different techniques of publishing online. Before i get to that.  I got to understand that online media has more advantage and it is advanced than print or broadcasting media. When you want to carry out a print journalism you will need to consider space, when you are engaged in broadcasting, you will also need to consider time. But in online journalism there are unlimited time and space. You can also attach more that just words in an online media. You can attach pictures to your story and you can also attach videos and audios to your story in an online media.   Most journalist have left the medivial age of print Journalism for a new modern journalism known as online j...

The course  exposes us to the  digital  world of journalism  as transformed from the traditional  way. The lecturer in charge  Dr Tunde Akanni made efforts in making the course  a smooth sail altrough  his encounter  with us, showing  more of his fatherly trait to us in his mode of teaching.  He started the course by making us to understand the dynamics of the Internet and how the inception of the Internet led to the fallout of the military industrial complex in 1960. We also looked at various  online journalism  platforms, and how they came to existence,  some historical  angle of the convergence  of technologies  till it effected changes in the media industry  was duely  examined.   Efforts were made by the lecturer in charge to reach us more closely...

By Imoedemhe Precious When I saw the course tittle and code on the time table, I kept wondering what the course is all about (online journalism). Later, a lecturer walked in and said he was to take the course, I felt happy, at last , I will know what the course is all about.    The usefulness of the course online journalism was taught it's importance and other necessary things for that day- introduction. From there,  I picked interest in the course. I took it serious for a reason I couldn't fathom. then I was always looking forward to any day we will be having online journalism. I made more research and always ask questions in the class about the aspect I did not understand.  Different topics were taught during classes I got to know lot of things, who invented www ( world wide web) and also more about online communication, social media and their basic characteristics.
