MY EXPERIENCE IN ONLINE JOURNALISM CLASS
By Ella Okafor
At the beginning of the hamattan semester of the 2017/2018 session in 300 level, a new course was introduced to all journalism students. This course is titled "Online Journalism ", and it is meant to enlighten journalism students on the internet and how it has come to avail journalists, especially with the radical intervention of Professor Tim Berners-Lee.
The course was taken by Dr. Akanni, and he took his time to discuss key topics with us. Some of these topics are: The dynamics of the internet, understanding the dynamics of the internet, News production in the age of the internet, managing online platforms, and lastly, Introductory data journalism.
With all that were discussed, I've been able to know some of the technical concepts of both local and international organizations of which few of them are: Online Publishers Association of Nigeria(OPAN), Nigeria Internet Registration Association(NIRA), GOCON, Nigerian Press Organization(NPO).
I really appreciate the fact that the last topic (Pitfalls/cautionary measures of managing online platforms) was taught, because Dr. Akanni did not only list the risk involved in the internet, he also took time to highlight and explain the solutions to them.
What I really enjoyed most about this course was the Area of concentration that was given to us at the end of the lecture for exam.
